Bread and other foods in a can is more than a ‘geek trend’ as you mentioned… the country is very earthquake prone, therefore people need FOOD they can eat after a quake when there is no other way to cook etc.
Availale in more places than just Akihabara too.
Simple explanation if you think about it… and walk a little further around Tokyo, and not just Akiba.

Thanks for the tip. Of course, since I LIVE in Tokyo I’m not exactly confined to Akihabara. Sure it’s available in other places, but the ratio is basically 99-1 with Akihabara having the most of these products.
It has nothing to do with “earthquakes” as you mentioned. It’s geek food, though perhaps leaking out into the mainstream a bit now…

As you say, it may have ‘leaked out’ to other places and uses… as it is in the “disaster equipment area” of my local DIY store - Keio D2.
So it may be becoming an earthquake food option.
