Tokyo Fashion Trends - Maid goes street style

Written by: Sven Kilian on June 11, 2006 at 12:30 am | In Fashion & Lifestyle Trends |

Just a short update on the maid trend in Japan. After the maid cafes sprung up in Tokyo a bit more than a wek ago and got worldwide extensive press coverage, everybody would have thought it will be old stuff in a year or so. BUT…not so at all. Not only are the maid cafes popular as ever with waiting hours up to 1 hour. Also many other places sprung up, from foot massage to drinking bars with the staff all dressed up. Shops offer maid costumes not only for party goods but also as a regular fashion. So you don`t need to be real lucky to find girls running around in full dress-up like this girl in the picture below spotted in harajuku…

  1. I love cute gilrs in cosplay (As anyone), and maid-con is one of my favorites.
And though the idea of runing into a girl like the one on the picture in my way to work seems like a dream, I cant help but wonder, if girls just started to dress up like maids as regular street clothes, would the maid outfit loose its alure?

  3. This must be a Tokyo thing. I’ve been working in Nagoya for about a year and been to Osaka several times and seen nobody dressed up as a maid.

That said, there are an unsettling number of men dressing as women, lately.

  6. Dalleena - the maids “do a little dance” for the patrons then play games with them (like tic tac toe). Each cafe has its signature moves that go with the various types of food/drink you order. If you order a coffee drink they’ll sing this song while mixing your cream and sugar in:

    maze, maze
    oishikunaaaare

    translation:
    mixing, mixing
    makes it yummy!

They have journals the maids write entries in and regular customers (stalker types) write fan notes in…

Its all this quest for childhood innocence (in terms of the behaviour) mixed with a masked sexual fetish as most of the otaku going can’t deal with a real woman and use the maids to set up fantasies they can relate to (read: wank to)

Its all very harmless and silly. When it started, the maids were otaku girls (cute but homely) but lately, the cabaret girls figured out they could get more money without degrading themselves as much as in the stip/drinking clubs for the salarymen… which makes the girls much sexier, but alot of the “care and sensitivity” has been lost as a result

  7. Eric Carlson and Joan Wagar, A,K,A, Doubleclick and Mrs Dash,( yes those are there nicknames they gave each other.) admitted to poisoning me while I was a plasma donor back in 2005.
Eric carlson pedofied me behind prison walls and then framed me as a pedophile on march 26th 2007, I caught the crime on a audio recorder I put in Joan’s purse.
there were people in authority helping them with this and nobody in authority will help they pretend nothing happened and refuse to investigate this.
Eric carlson changed his hair color and his name but this is not hidden, only ignored by the authority’s and media
Im disabled from being poisoned and the hospitals refuse to admit Im poisoned.
My Family is in danger from these people and I have no other recoarse but to make these charges public.
My name is Terry Wagar,Im from portland oregon and Im backing up these charges.
I have been threatened with harassment charges by a Sargent walker, She is a portland police officer stationed at the OHSU hospital, for the non crime of reporting a multi murder conspiracy within that hospital.
