Tokyo wave pool manages to fit in some water
Written by: Michael Keferl on August 14, 2007 at 7:33 pm | In 03 Fashion & Lifestyle Trends |It’s summertime here in Tokyo, and since we’re in the middle of the Obon holiday week a lot of Tokyoites have left town for the countryside, leaving a strangely empty city behind. Those who stick around or come in from the countryside pack just about every tourist spot to the gills. We went to a local wave pool today to catch some sun, and could barely move! Believe it or not, the picture below is of a pool…

…and not just any pool, but a wave pool! It was broken until 3:00, and when they announced it was starting again, the following craziness happened. If you get motion sickness easily, please do not watch this video. It’s now abundantly clear why toys like the Healing Theater Umine Projector are created…it’s best to keep the waves on your ceiling sometimes.
Update: As one commenter noted, it’s pretty funny how the pool in the upper left corner is completely empty. Of course, if you think this wave pool is full, you should have seen the lazy river outside!

That is awesome. Americans would not be able to handle that kind of closeness. There would be fights. It is a testament to the manners in Japanese society.

Er, most of those people were probably too busy keeping themselves properly bouyant in that mess to worry too much about the people around them. Anybody who goes to a wave pool learns quickly that if its crowded, you’re getting bumped. Lots.

Why in god’s name would you WANT to swim in a pool with that much pee in it? I wonder what a bacterial/pathogen analysis of the water would turn up. [even with the pool filters running]

Think of the safety implications. Suppose a child in the middle of the pool drowns. No one would know in time.

On the contrary, I think that if a child in the middle of the pool drowns everyone *would* know on time, lol. No one has pointed out the obvious here. JAPAN IS AN ISLAND for gods sake why would you pay to enter that pool when you’re surrounded by ocean?
Comment by The Dude — August 16, 2007 #
Of course Clayton is right: only the Japanese are capable of peaceably assembling. That’s why America has never had a gathering of more than 100 people in one place at any one time. Woodstock, The Million Man March, and Manhattan in general were all illusions achieved through camera trickery on behalf of the liberal media (to mention but a few of their nefarious deceptions).
As to the video itself, I found the high-pitched sound of thousands of giddy kids most surprising - and entertaining.
Comment by AG — August 16, 2007 #
I agree with AG. Woodstock was totally photoshopped.
Comment by jen — August 16, 2007 #
You couldn’t do this in America because the women would all complain about someone grouping them, whether or not it happened. Then there would be a lawsuit.
In Japan, the women just accept being groped in public. That’s progress!

Over on the Japanese blogs, there’s lots of Japanese whining about this is a video of a
public pool in Chongqing, China. Other Japanese are saying it’s CHIBIKKO pool in Yoshino Nara.
I began doubting my own news story from 2005-Aug-20:
Japanese joke pools— I’ve only been to the Toshimaen Piss Pool of Horror.
However, a quick google more shows photos of this Tokyo Summerland Wave Pool.

theslyestfox,
You need a bit more slyness to detect commentors’ facetiousness. But if one wanted to fake such a thing, it could be done (http://www.massivesoftware.com/). The problem is not the how, but the why.

Looks like it combines the wonderful acoustics of a crowded gymnasium with the ambiance of bathing in lukewarm urine. Then again, people ride the subway each day, and from how I hear it described, I guess that’s much the same thing.
Comment by DaveX — August 16, 2007 #
The subway is a lot dryer, but it smells like a crowded gym. The rest is quite the same. People wear more clothes, though, that’s nice and there a not so many rubber duckies in the subway.
Probably.
Comment by Cassandra — August 16, 2007 #
There’s also the issue of liability; no life guard can see if someone has gone under in that crowded pool. in the USA, that means millions of dollars for a lawsuit and a pool shutdown if theres a
drowning.

Thank God for us Americans who’d look at this and say, “F**k that, I’m going to the bar”.
Comment by Seamus Andrew Murphy — August 16, 2007 #
Really now, what’s the point. The management needs to implement some kind of cap on how many people can enter the pool at a time, not just “however many will phyiscally fit”. On the subway it’s different, you’re not there to have fun. You’ve got a place to get to and come hell or high water (shut up) you’re gonna get there, with the 3 million other people who need to get somewhere.
Also, I doubt there’s a sanitation issue there. The water is chlorinated remember. Chlorine doesn’t stop the sardine-feeling though.

This is not Photoshoped! I live in Japan, this type of thing happens all the time during the holiday season. A couple of days ago I was riding the trains in Tokyo that reached 200% occupancy. This means that all of the seats were full plus the same amount of people were standing in the isles and between train cars. What is crazy about this is that people were still trying to buy tickets. They had to turn people away for two days. The occupancy would of been around 250%+ if they didn’t. The Japanese police regularly have to push and cram passengers into trains just so the doors will close. To sum it up, this is just another holiday in Japan.

Guido is correct! I lived in Tokyo and I’ve seen this kind of thing before. It is NOT photoshopped and not uncommon. You have to understand that Tokyo is a HUGE sprawling city and the Japanese flock to these types of activity areas whenever they have a little time off. Whether they are salarymen or students they often have little R&R time. Likewise, it is a time to be sociable. Let’s try to be a little understanding of different cultures instead of insisting it is a hoax or resorting to xenophobic insults.

Hey
Why are you all so amazed about this?
It’s a statutory holiday, all people are having a day of rest. And during summer they all go at the pool. They don’t go to swim there. They go to have fun. Someone told about the beach, there is the same crowd too.
I was in the same situation in Hungary at a aqua park with wave pool.
Comment by K.Arthur — August 16, 2007 #
I got trapped in a crowd at a shrine over new years back when I lived in Japan. I could not move in any direction and it was difficult to raise my hand above my waist to throw the coins at the shrine when the crowd swept by. The people in front of us were getting pelted by coins and the shorter Japanese women nearby were yelling, “It hurts! It hurts!” in Japanese.
It didn’t really have anything to do with manners or safety. I was unable to move for two and a half hours. But it was rather novel if nothing else. I had fun, but then again I was tall enough and far enough back from where the coins were going that I didn’t really get hurt. There was no groping because no one could move.

Actually that’s incorrect. Normal urine contains no bacteria or pathogens. But people with UTIs or STDs may indeed have bacteria or pathogens in their urine… Hence my statement:
“Why in god’s name would you WANT to swim in a pool with that much pee in it? I wonder what a bacterial/pathogen analysis of the water would turn up. [even with the pool filters running]?
So you only have to worry about nasty pee from people who are actually sick. Hmmm… still freakin’ disgusting.

It’s just a matter of over crowding in Tokyo. No one under 40 wants to live in the country-side anymore since there are no real jobs. So that basically only leaves Tokyo and Osaka. I really think the government should try to spur development of a new city somewhere else in Japan.

Comment by eric swan — August 17, 2007 #
I can’t believe they don’t limit the number of people allowed in at one time. They should sell tickets that are good for only 1 hour of pool time - then clear it out and bring in the next group. What a safety hazard!
I don’t think I’ll be able to properly complain about my local public pool anymore and how “crowded” it is. Crowded for me is having only 3 feet of empty space around - and God help the child that bumps into me. I can’t stand when I feel a stranger’s arm even brush mine. Wow. What an interesting difference in cultures!

I also think many people don’t let cultural ignorance stop them from loud, crass snap judgements and rude comments.
The Japanese are very different from Americans (duh). Personal hygiene is incredibly important, as is politeness in public. Those of you who pipe up with your urine comments are largely projecting your own less sanitary experiences onto them, methinks.

I agree that if this is real (which i do believe it to be at this point) then the japanese certainly wouldnt be upto any mischief in a public space - well at least the vast majority - their culture is so completely removed in terms of manners and social etiquette from what the western world assumes is natural behaviour. thers nothing wrong with them enjoying the pool - if they can and i think that its also true that although its dangerous if anyone seemed to be in trouble everyone would probably help them…unless they’re evil. crowd surfing? haha. Personally I think it looks as comfortable as the underground in high summer - but surely any of you who arent n00bs must have been to a stadium gig of some kind - in particular a rock gig - and youre packed in far closer than that and people have lighters and knives and things - and you dont care ause youre just having fun! I imagine its the same for them. - I once saw the chilis in one of the biggest stadium in the UK - sold out - i forced my way to the front - it was only at the end of the concert when i turned round on the barrier i realised just how packed wed been - i wasnt even standing up i was leaning on everone behing me and the people attempting to come through my arms!!! - in the midst of euphoria the human mind does give a crap!

I live in the good old USA. I have BEEN in a wave pool that was every bit as crowded. It was a little smaller, but just as jam-packed as that.
So I shall, in a mature and adult manner, go *thbbbbbbbbbbbt* to everybody who insists this could only happen in Japan. And twice that for the people crying photoshop or insisting somebody would drown.
And for the love of small furry animals… somebody could have a heart attack and die while driving a car (and they have!) and nobody could save them, plus they could hit and kill other people. We don’t outlaw driving now, do we? Are you people really so concerned about your safety that you want to live like the boy in the bubble rather than go out and have a little fun?

If the people in that pool had to go pee….they would not be able to make their way out. YES…they would end up peeing in that pool. It would contain more pee than water. Also, I would have no desire to be touching that many people nor would I want to be in pee/water that could spread disease and contaminants than any number of those people could carry. The world was NOT designed to have this many people on the planet. We will destroy the earth, just with our numbers.

Anybody that is skeptical about the photo or the movie should come here and witness awful ants-like crowds in Omotesando, Shinjuku or Shibuya especially on weekends.
Even to a genuine Tokyoite, it’s really disgusting. One day if you’re not very well, you might feel like throwing up…
After all, the scene is something that I’ve been always familiar with and there’s no surprise.

Comment by Kaze — September 21, 2007 #
Those who are saying how safe this pool is, are all 100% wrong. This pool is an accident waiting to happen, as well as a bacteria-infested pool of shit.
I happen to lifeguard. And take it from me; when someone takes a shit in a pool, the bacteria which causes Staph infection can live for up to 2 weeks in a chlorinated pool if not treated immediately.
Also, there is no possible way for someone to recognize a drowning victim, when they really aren’t paying attention to much of anything except their own safety to keep THEM from drowning as well.
Also, most kids are passive drowning victims. Meaning they don’t splash around a whole lot, because they generally suck in too much water and black out while UNDER water. So it’s not like they’re holding up a sign and jumping up and down on one foot shouting “I’M DROWNING” to get people to notice them.
Three conclusions:
1: This pool is disgusting, and I wouldn’t be caught dead swimming in it.
2: It’s a fucking miracle no-one drowned that day. (or did they?)
3: I’m pretty damned sure that plenty of people got infected with Staphylococcus.

I agree with “daggit’s” comments~totally dangerous and germ ridden. NO child of mine would ever be in that pool.
Also, when I go to a pool, well, I’m funny..I like to SWIM in it. I can barely handle malls around Christmas time, no way would I even be in that building without being heavily sedate.
It is true that in Tokyo they are used to being crowded in everything everywhere they go, so they are surely more accustomed to that than Americans would ever be.

Comment by Lexxie — October 13, 2007 #
It’s generally accepted in Japan that you only swim in the ocean until “O-Bon” (August summer holiday), after which time the jellyfish migrate in and wash up all over the beaches and wading shores. Even when this is not the case, accidental deaths and fear of jellies are given as reasons why the locals never go to the beach. And during O-Bon loads of people even say “don’t go into the pool” because of a silly ghost-sucking water superstition. But Japan is hot, insanely hot, during this month, and the pools inevitably fill up as all kids and even many workers are on holiday, and someone DOES inevitably drown, and the news reports say “woop, another three children drowned during O-Bon at So-and-So resort/pool/beach”. Any wonder they drown? Japanese are idiots.
Comment by rfillingh — October 13, 2007 #
If you look closely, the water is not that deep. In fact, you can see that the majority of the people are touching the bottom of the pool on the “ebb tide”.
I go to the wave pool with my kids all the time. It’s a blast and quite crowded sometimes, but this obviously takes the cake.

How could anyone enjoy this when your personal space becomes the skin on your body? I would also like to see the before and after of the water level, probably would drop a foot or two after everyone left the pool.
Comment by Jacob — October 27, 2007 #
A local town just opened up a KFC/Longjohn Silvers, and the line from the drive-thru to the road backed up traffic and people were waiting for up to 2 hours to get to order from this place. In Japan, people do the same to swim in a wave pool. I find that somewhat comical but disturbing at the same time. Also about the urine thing, I haven’t read all the comments, so if this was addressed already, i apologize, but urine is sterile for only a short time after words after ejection from the bladder. In fact, you can drink your own urine (such as when you find yourself in a desert) without a problem, but only within the first 1-2 hours. Furthermore, bacteria then start to grow and spawn, creating a bio-hazardous liquid.
Comment by Josh — October 30, 2007 #
I live in Japan, and I’ve been to those pools. I haven’t read all the comments, but a couple of points. The reason the pool in the upper left is empty is because it is the pool where water slides discharge. Possibly to save staff, the pools often only open up the water slide for a few minutes at a time, and at that time the wave pool is likely to be closed. This causes great congestion in whatever attraction happens to be open at the time.
In regards to a child drowning in the middle of that sea of humanity, another interesting point is that it is extremely rare to find deep water in a Japanese pool. I have been to a couple of pools that had diving tanks, (one was closed for maintenance). The tanks are small, and once you dive into the tank, you must get out immediately! Most pools have swimming areas that are 4 to 5 feet deep, and they have age restrictions on them, so that you have to be in Jr high school or above to go into them. Then on top of that they have lots of lifeguards. Japanese don’t like taking chances!

And as for why they don’t just go to the beach… well, I’ve been to the “beach” along many portions of the coast- try to find the sand, I dare you (climbing over sharp blocks of rock isn’t a fun way to begin your swim). True, some sandy beaches actually exist- and people do go to them, but there is the slight problem of all of those giant, freaking, huge jellyfish.

In Japan there´s these vacation halls because there´s so little coastline because it´s all built with buildings.
In Japan it´s not uncommon for people getting close contact in public place.
I bet it´s not very hygienic place at all
Ryan and Astrochicken you really should go out and see world! There´s much more reality outside your house than in your PC and Photoshop. Not every video you find in the Internet is fake. Also it´s not possible to manipulate video with still image software.
ps: I am also imaging professional so I know what software can be used to manipulate video. And that´s not Photoshop. Boujou, After Effects or SynthEyes yes but not Photoshop alone.

To the people saying this was edited… http://youtube.com/watch?v=inA-36YRV0Y they have a video. It would take tons of skill to edit that. It’s not fake. And the person who thought they were amazingly smart because “Japan is an island”. It’s a huge island. Plus, it doesn’t stop them from having pools.
